Mared Lewis:
Although I have written lots of other books, Fi a Mr Huws is my first novel for learners.
The broad theme of the novel is the empty nest when the last child leaves for college leaving the house quietly- a experience that is familiar to many of us, I'm sure!
When the only child of the main character Lena leaves for University, she starts questioning her relationship with her husband Ben.
Does she completely know him by now? And what are the lies that she is starting to discover about him? In order to try to fill her life, and to avoid facing Dynwen the cat too often, she throws herself into new situations. She comes across a number of different characters that extend the horizons of her world. This starts a series of adventures and troubles that keep Lena's life busy and lead to a bit of strife!

Exclusive author insight: Sarah introduces Dysgu Byw
Mae Siwan yn actores. Wel, mae hi’n ‘gorffwys’ ar hyn o bryd, ac yn y cyfamser, mae hi’n ennill ei thamaid fel tiwtor Cymraeg. Dyma’i hanes hi a’i grŵp hynod amrywiol o ddysgwyr; rhai’n dda a rhai... ychydig yn wahanol i’r arfer. Ond mae mwy na gwersi iaith yn y nofel hon.
Siwan is an actress. Well, she is 'resting' at the moment, and in the meantime she is getting by as a Welsh tutor. Here is her story and a varied group of learners... some good and some ... a bit different from the usual. But there is more than language teaching in this novel.
Mae Dysgu Byw yn nofel ddoniol, fyrlymus ac ychydig bach yn cheeky. Os ydych chi’n chwilio am rywbeth difyr i'w ddarllen gyda diod fach a’ch traed i fyny, rydych chi wedi dod o hyd i’ch partner perffaith.
Dysgu Byw is a novel that is funny, bubbly and a little bit cheeky. If you are looking for something entertaining to read with a little drink and your feet up, then you have found the perfect partner.

Gobaith cyhoeddwyr y gyfres yw y bydd yn gymorth i baratoi dysgwyr Cymraeg ar gyfer darllen llyfrau Cymraeg i oedolion yn annibynnol.

The series of 6 books leads learners from when they start reading (Level 1: Foundation) to Level 2 (Sylfaen), for those who have been learning Welsh for a year or two, and Level 3 (Intermediate), to those who are more proficient. The publishers of the series hope that it will help prepare Welsh learners to read Welsh books for adults independently.

Casgliad o ddarnau darllen difyr ac amrywiol gyda geirfa ar bob tudalen yw cynnwys y cyfrolau, ac mae’r arlwy yn amrywio o straeon byrion i erthyglau, cyfweliadau, jôcs a phosau. The content of the volumes is a collection of entertaining and varied reading pieces with a glossary on each page, and the content varies from short stories to articles, interviews, jokes and puzzles. “Pwrpas y llyfrau yw meithrin a datblygu sgiliau darllen dysgwyr ynghyd â gwella sgiliau ieithyddol mewn modd hwyliog a diddorol, a darparu deunydd darllen difyr ac addas fydd yn eu harwain ymlaen o un cam i’r nesaf,” meddai Meleri Wyn James, golygydd y gyfres.

Ysgrifennais i ‘Ble Mae’r Gair?’ i roi ymarfer darllen i bobl sy’n dechrau dysgu Cymraeg. Yn y llyfr mae posau fel chwileiriau, nadredd geiriau, anagramau, codau ac atalnodi. Hefyd mae ychydig o ffeithiau diddorol a jôcs!
Mae darllen Cymraeg yn help mawr wrth ddysgu Cymraeg ond ar y dechrau mae’n gallu bod yn anodd iawn i ddeall stori. Roedd Mair Rees, golygydd y llyfr, wedi cael y syniad am lyfr posau syml a gofynnodd hi i fi baratoi’r llyfr.
Mae geirfa’r posau yn dilyn Cwrs Mynediad CBAC felly geiriau pob dydd ydyn nhw. Dyn ni’n gwerthu’r llyfr yn ein siop lyfrau, Cant a Mil Vintage yng Nghaerdydd ac mae’n ddiddorol gweld pwy sy’n prynu’r llyfr. Wrth gwrs weithiau mae dechreuwyr yn prynu’r llyfr ond hefyd mae rhieni yn prynu’r llyfr achos bod eu plant yn mwynhau chwileiriau. Hefyd mae pobl sy wedi dysgu mwy o Gymraeg yn prynu’r llyfr achos bod y posau’n hawdd iddyn nhw ac maen nhw’n gallu ymlacio gyda’r Gymraeg cyn mynd i gysgu!
Gobeithio byddwch chi’n mwynhau’r posau. Os oes syniadau gyda chi am lyfrau eraill cysylltwch â fi, bydda i’n hapus iawn i glywed oddi wrthoch chi!

I wrote ‘Ble Mae’r Gair?’ to give people starting to learn Welsh some reading practice. In the book there are wordsearches, word snakes, anagrams, codes and punctuation. There are also some interesting facts and jokes!
Reading Welsh is a big help when learning Welsh but at the beginning it can be very difficult to understand a story. Mair Rees, the editor of the book, had the idea of a simple puzzles book and she asked me to prepare the book.
The vocabularly of the puzzles follow the WJEC Cwrs Mynediad (Entry Course) so they are everyday words. We sell the book in our bookshop, Cant a Mil Vintage in Cardiff and it is interesting to see who buys the book. Of course beginners do buy the book but also parents buy the book because their children enjoy wordsearches. People who have learnt more Welsh also buy the book because the puzzles are easy for them and they can relax in Welsh before going to sleep!
I hope you enjoy the puzzles. If you have ideas for any other books please get in touch with me, I will be very glad to hear from you!

Mae'r llyfr hwn yn disgrifio sut i oresgyn pryder ac ennill hyder pan mae dysgwyr yn defnyddio Cymraeg. Mae llawer o lyfrau a CDs ar gael i helpu dysgu ond does dim llawer o lyfrau wedi cael eu cyhoeddi i roi cyngor i ddysgwyr ar sut i ddefnyddio’r iaith yn y gymuned.
Nod y llyfr yw calonogi dysgwyr i sgwrsio gyda’r bobl ro’n nhw’n arfer osgoi. Dw i’n cynnig cyngor ar ddod dros bryder, cynnal cymhelliant a rheoli amser, dysgu geirfa, ynganu a goslef, amharu ar y diwylliant, defnyddio’r rhyngrwyd ac adnoddau’r cyfryngau, cadw cyfnodolyn a dyddiadur a siarad â phobl iaith gyntaf.

This book describes how to overcome anxiety and gain confidence when using Welsh. Books and CDs abound on how to learn Welsh – yet little has been published on using Welsh in the community.
The aim of the book is to get learners chatting to the people they used to avoid. I offer advice on handling anxiety, sustaining motivation, time management, building up vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation, imbibing the culture, using internet and media resources, keeping a journal and talking with fluent speakers.

Welsh Rules gan Heini Gruffudd

Heini Gruffudd:
Dechreuodd Welsh Rules fel Cymraeg Da. Roedd Y Lolfa wedi cael comisiwn gan ACCAC (Awdurdod Cymwysterau Cwiricwlwm ac Asesu Cymru) i wneud llyfr gramadeg i ddisgyblion a myfyrwyr ysgol sy’n dysgu’r Gymraeg yn ail iaith. Fel i £4,000 am wneud y gwaith. Ro’n i’n credu bod hyn yn lot o arian, ond aeth y gwaith yn fwy ac yn fwy, ac yn y diwedd, roedd yr arian yn llawer llai na’r isafswm cyflog. Ond doedd hyn ddim yn bwysig- y peth pwysig i mi oedd bod y llyfr gramadeg yn un defnyddiol.

Ond roedd un anhawster. Roedd rhaid i Cymraeg Da fod yn llyfr Cymraeg- roedd rhaid i’r esboniadau fod yn Gymraeg. Felly roedd yr esboniadau weithiau’n defnyddio iaith oedd yn fwy cymhleth na’r gramadeg oedd yn cael ei gyflwyno. Dyna pam penderfynes i, gyda chefnogaeth Y Lolfa, droi Cymraeg Da yn Welsh Rules.

Mae sawl peth yn gwneud Welsh Rules yn wahanol i bob llyfr gramadeg arall. Mae e’n cynnwys cartwnau a lluniau. Mae’r rhain yn dangos sut mae’r gramadeg yn gallu cael ei ddefnyddio mewn brawddegau, gyda thipyn bach o hiwmor.

Ond y prif beth gwahanol yw bod Welsh Rules yn rhoi sawl cam dysgu i elfennau gramadeg. Mae 20 cam dysgu gan y berfau, mae 19 cam dysgu gan yr arddodiaid, 15 cam dysgu gan ansoddeiriau, 14 cam dysgu gan ragenwau, ac ati. Fel arfer mae llyfrau gramadeg yn taflu gwybodaeth am yr elfennau yma i gyd gyda’i gilydd, ac mae hyn yn ei gwneud hi’n anodd dysgu’r iaith a dysgu’r gramadeg. Trwy rannu pob elfen yn gamau dysgu, mae’n bosibl i ddysgwyr ddysgu popeth yng ngham un berfau, cam un rhagenwau, cam un cymalau, ac ati, cyn mynd ymlaen i gam 2.

Mae’r llyfr hefyd yn cynnwys ymarferion o sawl math, fel bod dysgwyr yn gallu defnyddio’r gramadeg fel llyfr dysgu.
Heini Gruffudd:
Welsh Rules started as Cymraeg Da. The publisher Y Lolfa received a commission from the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales to make a grammar book to school pupils and students learning Welsh as a second language. It was £4,000 to do the job. I thought that this was a lot of money, but the amount of work increased and increased, and in the end, the money was less than the minimum wage. But that wasn't important- the important thing to me was that the grammar book was useful.

But there was one difficulty. Cymraeg Da had to be a Welsh language book- the explanations had to be in Welsh. So sometimes the explanations used a language that was more complex than the grammar presented. That was why I decided, with the support of Y Lolfa, to turn Cymraeg Da into Welsh Rules.

There are several things that make Welsh Rules different to every other grammar book. It includes cartoons and pictures. These shows how the grammar can be used in sentences, with a bit of humour.

But the main different thing about Welsh Rules is that it gives several stages to learning grammar. The verbs have 20 learning stages, the prepositions have 19 learning stages, the adjectives have 19 learning stages, the pronouns have 14 learning stages etc. Usually grammar books throw information about all these elements together, and this makes it difficult to learn the language and grammar. Through sharing each element in learning stages, it is possible for learners to learn everything in one step for one verb, one step for pronouns, one step for clauses and so on before moving on to step 2.

The book also includes many types of excercise, so that the learner can use the grammar as a learning book.

The Welsh Learners Dictionary gan Heini Gruffudd
Heini Gruffudd:
Pan o’n i’n dysgu oedolion, roedd yn eitha amlwg fod dim geiriadur handi iddyn nhw: roedd geiriaduron Cymraeg yn rhoi rhestr o eiriau, ond ddim yn rhoi help ar sut i ddefnyddio geiriau mewn brawddegau. Dyw’r Welsh Learner’s Dictionary felly ddim yn dilyn patrwm y geiriaduron Cymraeg oedd yng Nghymru ar y pryd.

Mae e’n dechrau trwy roi patrwm brawddegau, ac amserau’r ferf, fel bod dysgwyr yn gwybod sut i wneud brawddegau syml. Wedyn yn y geiriadur, penderfynes i gynnwys enghreifftiau o eiriau mewn brawddegau. Ond es i un cam ymhellach.

Dyw geiriaduron ddim yn cynnig geiriau fel ‘roedd’. Pam? Am fod ‘roedd’ yn dod o’r ferf ‘bod’. Mae ‘bod’ mewn geiriaduron, ond dyw ‘roedd’ a ‘rydych’ ac ati ddim mewn geiriaduron. Ond mae’r Welsh Learner’s Dictionary yn rhoi ‘roedd’, ‘rwyt’, ‘rwy’ ac ati yn y rhestr o eiriau. Roedd geiriaduron yn rhoi’r arddodiad, fel ‘at’ neu ‘i’, ond doedden nhw ddim yn dangos sut mae’r rhain yn gallu newid i ‘atat ti’ neu ‘iddyn nhw’. Felly penderfynes i gynnwys hyn yn y geiriadur, er mwyn i ddysgwyr allu defnyddio’r rhain heb broblem.

Er mwyn i’r geiriadur fod yn un handi, doedd dim pwrpas iddo fe fod yn un mawr. Wrth i ddysgwyr fynd ymlaen trwy’r blynyddoedd dysgu, roedd yn amlwg bod geiriaduron mwy o faint ar gael. Felly fe wnes i gadw’r geiriadur i tua 10,000 o brif eiriau – 20,000 gan gynnwys y Saesneg. Doedd hi ddim yn bosibl gwybod pa 10,000 o eiriau Cymraeg yw’r rhai mwyaf cyffredin, neu’r rhai mwy aml eu defnydd. Efallai y bydd y gwaith sy’n cael ei wneud nawr ar Gorpws y Gymraeg yn rhoi’r wybodaeth i ni. Ond yn 1998, roedd rhaid i fi ddewis geiriau, ar sail y gwaith ro’n i wedi’i wneud mewn dosbarthiadau i oedolion ac wrth ddysgu’r Gymraeg fel ail iaith mewn ysgolion.

Rwy’n gobeithio bod y geiriadur yn help i lawer o ddysgwyr o hyd– mae e’n dal i werthu’n dda.
Heini Gruffudd:
When I was teaching adults, it was quite obvious that there wasn't a handy dictionary for them: Welsh dictionaries gave lists of words, but they didn't give help on how to use words in sentences. So the Welsh Learner's Dictionary didn't follow the pattern of Welsh dictionaries in Wales at the time.

It starts through giving patterns of sentences, and verb tenses, so that learners can know how to use simple sentences. Then in the dictionary, I decided to use examples of words in sentences. But I went one step further.

Dictionaries don't include words like 'roedd'. Why? Because 'roedd' comes from the verb 'bod'. 'Bod' is in dictionaries, but 'roedd' and 'rydych' and so on aren't in dictionaries. But the Welsh Learner's Dictionary gives prepositions, like 'at' neu 'i', but it doesn't show how these can be used to change to 'atat ti' or 'iddyn nhw'. So I decided to include these in the dictionary, so that learners can use these without a problem.

Although the dictionary is handy, there wasn't a need for it to be large. As learners progress through the years of learning, it is obvious that larger dictionaries are available. So I kept the dictionary to about 10,000 main words- 20,000 including the English. It wasn't possible to know which 10,000 Welsh words were most common, or used most often. Perhaps the work being done by the Corpus now will make this information available to us. But in 1998, I had to choose the words, based on the work I've done in adult classes and in teaching Welsh as a second language in schools.

I hope that the dictionary is a help to lots of learners still- it continues to sell well.
