Addysgydd ac Awdures Eiry Miles: Creu cyrsiau newydd ar gyfer dysgu Cymraeg / Educator and Author Eiry Miles: Creating new courses for learning Welsh

Mae Eiry Miles yn gweithio i’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol, ble mae hi’n creu cyrsiau Cymraeg i Oedolion newydd. Sut mae mynd ati i greu cyrsiau newydd sbon? Yma, mae hi’n rhannu sut mae’n digwydd…

Eiry Miles works at the  National Centre for Learning Welsh, where she is creating new Welsh for language courses. What is involved in creating a completely new course? Here she shares how it happens…

Ers dros flwyddyn bellach, dw i wedi bod yn gweithio i’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol fel Swyddog Gweithredol Datblygu’r Cwricwlwm. Beth yw hynny felly? Wel, yn syml, dw i’n rhan o dîm sy’n creu cyrsiau ar gyfer Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol newydd sbon Cymraeg i Oedolion. Mae Eirian Conlon yn ysgrifennu’r cyrsiau Mynediad, Sylfaen a Canolradd, a fy ngwaith i yw ysgrifennu’r cwrs Uwch (Uwch 1, 2 a 3). Does neb wedi cael eu cyflogi’n unswydd i ysgrifennu cyrsiau Cymraeg i Oedolion o’r blaen, felly dw i’n teimlo’n freintiedig iawn! For over a year now I have been working for The National Centre for Learning Welsh as an Executive Curriculum Development Officer. What is that then? Well, simply, I’m part of a team who create courses for the brand new Welsh for Adults National Curriculum. Eirian Conlan is writing the Entrance, Foundation and Intermediate, and my work is writing the Higher course (Higher 1, 2 & 3). No-one has been specifically employed to write Welsh for Adults courses before, so I feel very privileged!
Cyn dechrau ar y gwaith ysgrifennu, cawson ni hyfforddiant gan Alison Sharpe sy’n brofiadol iawn ym maes cyhoeddi cyrsiau Saesneg. Cawson ni lawer o gyngor ar gynllunio a strwythuro cwrs iaith. Buon ni hefyd yn trafod y pethau pwysig i’w cynnwys, yn ogystal â PARSNIPS, sef y pethau i’w hosgoi mewn cyrsiau Saesneg (politics, alcohol, religion, sex, narcotics, -isms, pork!). Dw i ac aelodau eraill y tîm yn parhau i wneud ymchwil ac yn mynd i gynadleddau i ddysgu am arferion da ym maes dysgu iaith, fel cynadleddau IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) ac ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe). Hefyd, mae pwyllgor o arbenigwyr Cymraeg i Oedolion yn rhoi adborth ar ein gwaith ni, ac yn sicrhau ein bod ni ar y trywydd cywir. Before I started writing, we had training from Alison Sharpe who is very experienced in publishing English courses. We had lots of advice on planning and structuring a language course. We also discussed important things to include, as well as PARSNIPS, that is things to avoid in English courses- (politics, alcohol, religion, sex, narcotics, -isms, pork!). I and other team members continue to research and go to conferences to learn about good practice in language learning, such as IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) and ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe) conferences. In addition, a team of Welsh for Adults specialists give feedback on our work, and ensure that we are on the right track.
Felly, ar ôl yr holl ymchwil a pharatoi, sut mae’r cwrs Uwch newydd yn wahanol i gyrsiau sydd wedi bod o’r blaen? Yn gyntaf, penderfynon ni wneud cwrs ‘thematig’. Mae thema i bob uned, sy’n ymestyn geirfa’r dysgwyr ac yn eu hannog i drafod pynciau newydd a phrofiadau personol e.e. Y Gofod, Y Môr, Celf, Teimlo’n Lletchwith ac Arferion. So, after all the research and preparation, how is the new Higher course different to courses that have come before? Firstly, we decided to do a ‘thematic’ course. There are themes to each unit, which extend the vocabularyof learners and encourages them to discuss new subjects and personal experiences, such as Space, The Sea, Art, Feeling Awkward and Habits.
Yr ail beth yw bod llawer mwy o ffocws ar sgiliau gwrando, gydag o leiaf un darn gwrando neu wylio ym mhob uned. Mae hynny’n hollbwysig i helpu dysgwyr i sgwrsio y tu allan i’r dosbarth gyda siaradwyr Cymraeg rhugl. Weithiau, darnau wedi’u sgriptio ydyn nhw, ond gan amlaf maen nhw’n fideos a chlipiau o bobl ‘go iawn’ yn siarad. Mae cwmnïau teledu fel Tinopolis a Rondo yn hapus i rannu fideos gyda ni, ac mae’r BBC wedi bod yn hynod gefnogol. Rydym hefyd wedi ffilmio ‘vox pops’ yn ne a gogledd Cymru, lle mae pobl yn siarad yn gwbl naturiol mewn gwahanol dafodieithoedd. The second thing that we have put a lot more emphasis on is listening skills, with at least one piece of listening or watching in every unit. It’s all-important to help learners to talk outside the classroom with fluent speakers. Sometimes, they are scripted pieces, but most of them are videos and clips of ‘real’ speaking. Television companies such as Tinopolis and Rondo have been happy to share videos with us, and the BBC have been extremely supportive. We have been filming ‘vox pops’ in south and north Wales, where people speak completely naturally in different dialects.
Yn y gorffennol, mae darnau darllen Uwch wedi bod braidd yn hir. Yn y cwrs hwn, mae’r darnau darllen yn fyr ac yn amrywiol: dim mwy na 300 o eiriau os yn bosib! Mae’n rhaid i’r gwersi fod yn fywiog ac yn ddeinamig, gyda ffocws ar siarad. In the past, reading extracts at the Higher level have been a bit long. In this course, the reading extracts are short and varied: not more than 300 words if possible! The lessons must be lively and dynamic, with a focus on speaking.
Er mwyn cadw’r cwrs yn ffres ac yn gyfoes, bydd 5 o’r 30 uned Uwch yn cael eu newid bob blwyddyn, gan ddilyn digwyddiadau pwysig yn y calendr Cymreig. Er enghraifft, mae unedau Uwch eleni i gyd-fynd ag Un Bore Mercher (cyfres newydd S4C) a Dydd Miwsig Cymru, sy’n digwydd ym mis Chwefror 2018. Aled Davies sy’n ysgrifennu’r unedau cyfoes hyn. Ar ben hynny, mae llwyth o ddeunyddiau ar-lein i gyd-fynd â phob uned. Pan fydd popeth yn barod, bydd modd astudio’n gyfunol. To keep the course fresh and contemporary, 5 of the 30 Higher units will be changed each year, by following important events in the Welsh calendar. For example, the Higher units this year fit with One Wednesday Morning (a new S4C series) and Welsh Music Day, which happens in February 2018. Aled Davies is writing these contemporary units. Moreover, there are lots of online resources to fit with each unit. When everything is ready, it will be possible to follow a combined learning method.
Ar hyn o bryd, mae’r cwrs Uwch 1 newydd yn cael ei beilota yn y de, a’r cwrs Mynediad newydd yn cael ei beilota yn y gogledd. Ar ôl cael adborth gan y tiwtoriaid sy’n peilota’r cyrsiau, byddwn ni’n eu haddasu a’u mireinio. Wedyn, bydd y cyrsiau newydd yn cael eu dysgu trwy Gymru yn 2018-19.At the moment, the new Higher course 1 is being piloted in the south, and the new Entrance course is being piloted in the north. After receiving feedback by the tutors who are piloting the course, we will adapt them and refine them. Then, the new courses will be taught through Wales in 2018-19.
Mae’r datblygiadau hyn yn gyffrous iawn, a dw i wrth fy modd yn gweithio mewn swydd a fydd yn helpu dysgwyr Cymraeg i groesi’r bont i ddod yn rhugl. These developments are very exciting, and I’m delighted to be working in a job which is helping Welsh learners to cross the bridge to becoming fluent.

Mae hynny’n hollbwysig i helpu dysgwyr i sgwrsio y tu allan i’r dosbarth gyda siaradwyr Cymraeg rhugl.

Yn ychwanegol i weithio i’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol, mae Eiry yn awdur a chyfieithydd. Ei llyfr mwyaf diweddar yw Glas a Gwyrdd ac ei cyfieithiad newydd sbon yw Merch Ar-lein (Girl Online by Zoe Sugg).
