A dreamy indie-pop band whose music has appeared on Black Mirror and Made in Chelsea, an electro teenage pop artist, a live rock, rap and reggae group, a jazz singer, a dance producer and one of the fastest banjo players in Wales.

Dyma flas yn unig ar y 12 artist o Gymru sydd wedi’u dewis gan arbenigwyr y diwydiant i elwa o brosiect Gorwelion, sydd wedi gweld bandiau’n perfformio mewn gwyliau yn y DU ac yn rhyngwladol ac yn recordio caneuon yn stiwdios byd-enwog Rockfield a Maida Vale. Mae enwau’r artistiaid wedi cael eu cyhoeddi mewn digwyddiad a fynychwyd gan arbenigwyr y diwydiant yn y lleoliad cerddoriaeth eiconig, Clwb Ifor Bach, Caerdydd.

I ddathlu'r cyhoeddiad, cafodd yr artist o Gymru, Cadi Lane, ei chomisiynu i greu gwaith celf yn cynnwys pob band i'w arddangos uwchben Stryd Womanby yng Nghaerdydd, sy’n cael ei hystyried gan lawer fel calon sîn cerddoriaeth fyw de Cymru.

Nod Gorwelion Horizons, prosiect sy’n cael ei gyflwyno’n flynyddol gan BBC Cymru Wales mewn partneriaeth â Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, yw cefnogi datblygiad cerddoriaeth gyfoes annibynnol, newydd yng Nghymru. Mae detholiad o 12 o fandiau a cherddorion yn cael eu dewis bob blwyddyn gan arbenigwyr i fod yn rhan o'r prosiect, gan dderbyn arweiniad a chefnogaeth i sefydlu eu gyrfaoedd yn y diwydiant cerddoriaeth.

These are just a taste of the 12 Welsh artists chosen by industry experts who will benefit from the Horizons project, which has seen bands perform at UK and international festivals and record songs at the world-famous studios, Rockfield and Maida Vale.  The artists have been announced at an event attended by industry experts at the iconic music venue Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff.

To celebrate the announcement, Welsh artist Cadi Lane was commissioned to create an art installation featuring each band to hang above Womanby Street, Cardiff, widely considered as the heart of south Wales’ live music scene.

Horizons, a project delivered annually by BBC Cymru Wales in partnership with Arts Council of Wales, is designed to support the development of new, independent contemporary music in Wales.  A selection of 12 bands and musicians each year are chosen by experts to become part of the project, where they will receive guidance and support in crafting careers in the music industry.

Dywedodd Bethan Elfyn, cyflwynydd ar BBC Radio Wales a Radio Cymru a rheolwr prosiect Gorwelion Horizons: “Mae’n fraint enfawr cael datgelu pa artistiaid sy’n cael bod yn rhan o’r prosiect eleni. Mae'r rhestr yn cynnwys pobl greadigol eithriadol dalentog, sy’n cynhyrchu cerddoriaeth drawiadol ar draws amrywiaeth o genres. Rydyn ni’n derbyn cannoedd o geisiadau bob blwyddyn ac mae bob amser yn anodd iawn dewis 12 yn unig, ond mae’n deg dweud bod hon yn oes aur i gerddoriaeth Gymreig ar y funud.”

Yn ystod y flwyddyn nesaf, bydd 12 artist Gorwelion Horizons yn cael cynnig cyfleoedd i chwarae mewn nifer o wyliau cerddorol a recordio sesiynau radio. Bydd Bethan Elfyn a’i thîm yn gweithio gyda’r artistiaid i hybu eu cerddoriaeth, cefnogi eu datblygiad a chodi eu proffil yng Nghymru a thu hwnt.

Bethan Elfyn, BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru presenter and project manager of Horizons said: “It’s such a privilege to reveal which artists have made it onto the project this year.  The list includes some immensely talented creatives, producing stunning music across a variety of genres.  We get hundreds of applications each year and it’s always very tough to narrow them down to 12, but it’s fair to say this is a golden age of Welsh music right now.”

Over the next year, the Horizons 12 will be offered opportunities to play at a number of festivals and record radio sessions. Bethan Elfyn and her team will work with the artists to promote their music, support their development and raise their profile in Wales and beyond.

Dywedodd Huw Stephens, cyflwynydd ar BBC Radio 1: “Mae hi’n gyfnod cyffrous iawn o ran cerddoriaeth o Gymru. Mae Boy Azooga er enghraifft yn chwarae mewn gŵyl gyda Bob Dylan a Neil Young. Ac mae Alffa, y band roc o ogledd Cymru, oedd yn rhan o Gorwelion llynedd sy’n gyfrifol am ysgrifennu ‘Gwenwyn’, sef y gân Gymraeg cyntaf i gael mwy na 3 miliwn o wrandawyr ar Spotify.

“Mae hwn yn destament i bobl ar draws y byd sydd ddim yn unig yn gwrando ar gerddoriaeth sy’n dod o Gymru, ond pobl sy’n mynd allan o’i ffordd i’w ddarganfod. Mae pethau cyffrous i ddod o ran cerddoriaeth yng Nghymru ac rwy’n siŵr y bydd y 12 trac Gorwelion yn cyrraedd rhestrau chwarae pobl cyn diwedd y flwyddyn. Bydda’i yn sicr yn chwarae fy ffefrynnau i ar y radio.”

Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1 presenter said: “This is a massively exciting time for music from Wales. Take Boy Azooga as one example, who have just been announced as part of a festival line-up with Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Alffa, the north Wales rock duo on Horizons last year, were the band who wrote ‘Gwenwyn’, the first Welsh language track to pass 3 million plays on Spotify.

“I think that this is testament that music fans around the world are not only listening to music coming from Wales, but people are actually seeking it out. It’s a bit of a ‘watch this space moment’ for Welsh music. I’m sure that the Horizons tracks will be making their way into people’s favourite playlists before the year is out, and I know I’ll be playing my favourites on the radio.”

Roedd yr arbenigwyr ar y panel o 25 o bobl oedd yn gyfrifol am ddewis 12 artist Gorwelion eleni yn cynnwys cynhyrchwyr radio, trefnwyr gwyliau cerddorol, academyddion cerddorol ac asiantau cerddoriaeth ar lawr gwlad, gan gynnwys hyrwyddwr Sofar Sounds Ruth Lalliankimi, Julie Weir o Sony Music, Neal Thompson o Focus Wales, sylfaenydd Ladies of Rage Ffion Wyn, a threfnydd gŵyl Wales Goes Pop a hyrwyddwr Moon Club Liz Hunt.

Dywedodd Bethan Elfyn: “Mae’r bandiau’n cael eu dewis ar sail cerddoriaeth, momentwm a gweithgarwch - rydyn ni yma i gefnogi hynny.”

Dywedodd Lisa Matthews, o Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru: “Mae cerddoriaeth wedi bod yn rhan annatod o draddodiad diwylliannol Cymru ers cenedlaethau. Mae’n lle i bobl o bob cefndir gysylltu, creu a bod yn artistig mewn gofod cydweithredol. Mae’n hanfodol bwysig bod pobl greadigol yng Nghymru’n cael cefnogaeth, arbenigedd, cyfleoedd a llwyfannau i lwyddo. Am y rheswm yma, rydyn ni’n falch iawn o gefnogi Gorwelion a’r artistiaid sy’n dod drwy’r prosiect.”

Dywedodd Hannah Grace, aelod o brosiect Gorwelion yn 2015 sydd wedi perfformio ar Sioe Frecwast BBC Radio 2 a theithio gyda REEF y llynedd: “Prosiectau fel hyn sy’n gwneud Cymru’n wahanol i weddill y DU o ran cefnogi creadigrwydd a gallu cerddorol. Bydd Gorwelion yn cynnig cyfle i’r artistiaid o Gymru chwarae yn rhai o wyliau cerddorol mwyaf y byd ac yn y stiwdios recordio mwyaf eiconig yn hanes cerddoriaeth. Mae wedi bod yn wych bod yn rhan o brosiect Gorwelion ac rydw i’n edrych ymlaen at weld beth fydd gan y dyfodol i’w gynnig i’r artistiaid eleni.”

Hannah Grace, an alumna of the Horizons project from 2015 who has performed on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show and has toured with Hozier, said: “It’s projects like these that set Wales apart from the rest of the UK in terms of supporting creativity and musicianship.  Horizons will offer Welsh artists opportunities to play some of the world’s biggest festivals and the most iconic recording studios in the history of music.  It’s been fantastic to be a part of Horizons and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this year’s artists.”
