Ask Dr Gramadeg: Mwy am yr Amser Dyfodol / Extending the Future Tense

Dyma amser dyfodol berfau rheolaidd (edrychwch ar y dabl isod). Byddwn ni'n ychwanegu terfyniadau'r amser dyfodol at yr un bonion yn union y byddwn ni'n eu defnyddio gyda amser gorffennol berfau rheolaidd, e.e:

This is the regular future tense (see table below).  The future endings are added to exactly the same roots as used with the regular past tense, e.g:

Past
Codais i – I got up
Codon ni – We got up

Future
Coda i – I’ll get up
Codwn ni – We’ll get up

Berf / Verb Bôn / Root Terfyniadau'r Amser Dyfodol  / Future Endings Saesneg
Codi Cod- -a i * I will…
Talu Tal- -i di * You will…
Gweld Gwel- -iff e/hi (–ith e/hi) He/She will…
Edrych Edrych- -wn ni * We will…
Ffonio Ffoni- -wch chi * You will…
Helpu Help- -ân nhw They will…

* Dim ond y terfyniadau hyn rydyn ni wedi eu gweld cyn yr adran hon.
* Only the endings with an asterix have been covered prior to this entry.

As well as the regular future above, we have used the future of one of the irregular verbs - Gwneud.  (see table below).
Yn ogystal ag amser dyfodol berfau rheolaidd (uchod), rydyn ni wedi defnyddio amser dyfodol berfau afreolaidd - Gwneud (edrychwch ar y dabl isod):

Berf / Verb Terfyniadau'r Amser Dyfodol  / Future Endings Saesneg / English
(Gw)neud (Gw)na i * I will (do/make)
(Gw)nei di * You will (do/make)
(Gw)naiff e/hi (-ith e/hi) He/She will (do/make)
(Gw)nawn ni * We will (do/make)
(Gw)newch chi * You will (do/make)
(Gw)nân nhw They will (do/make)

* Dim ond y terfyniadau hyn rydyn ni wedi eu gweld cyn yr adran hon.

Fel arfer, ar lafar, byddwn ni'n hepgor y sain 'gw' o ffurfiau 'Gwneud'

Ystyr 'Gwneud' yw 'To do' (neu 'To make') yn Saesneg. Fodd bynnag, byddwn ni'n gallu defnyddio amser dyfodol 'Gwneud' i ffurfio amser dyfodol bob berf arall, hefyd. Rydyn ni eisoes wedi gweld hyn yn y 'Cwrs Mynediad', a byddwn ni'n gweld yr un peth yn yr uned hon hefyd, i ofyn cwestiynau fel:

Wnei di godi? Will you get up?
Wnewch chi dalu? Will you pay?

*Only the ones with an asterix have been covered prior to this entry.

The ‘gw’ in ‘gwneud’ is not usually pronounced in speech.

‘Gwneud’  means ‘to do’ or ‘to make’ but it can also be used with another verb to mean just ‘will’. We have already seen this in the ‘Cwrs Mynediad’ as well as in this unit, when asking the questions,

Wnei di godi?       Will you get up?
Wnewch chi dalu?      Will you pay?

Byddwn ni'n gallu gwneud yn union yr un path gyda 'Gwneud' mewn gosodiadau hefyd, yn lle defnyddio 'bôn y ferf + terfyniadau' ym mhob achos, e.e:

Tala i                               I will pay
Codwn ni                       We will get up

(Gw)na i dalu              'Na i dalu               I will pay
(Gw)nawn ni godi    'Nawn ni godi         We will get up

The same can be done with statements instead of using the regular verb roots and endings, e.g:

Tala i               I will pay
Codwn ni       We will get up

(Gw)na i dalu                I will pay
(Gw)nawn ni godi       We will get up

Byddwn ni'n defnyddio 'Gwneud' fel hyn yn aml ar lafar, yn enwedig gyda berfenwau hir, e.e:

Cyrhaedda i                       I will arrive
(Gw)na i gyrraedd         'Na i gyrraedd I will arrive

Defnyddia i fe                   I will use it
(Gw)na i ddefnyddio fe > 'Na i ddefnyddio fe        I will use it

‘Gwneud’ is often used in this way in speech, particularly with longer words. e.g:

Cyrhaedda i.                 I will arrive
(Gw)na i gyrraedd.      I will arrive

Defnyddia i fe                        I will use it
(Gw)na i ddefnyddio fe        I will use it

Bydd y ferfenw sy'n dilyn ffurf ar 'Gwneud' wastad yn treiglo'n feddal. Hawdd fyddai dysgu amser dyfodol 'Gwneud' ac wedyn byddech chi'n gallu ei ddefnyddio bob tro, gyda phob berf. Mae'n bosibl y byddwch chi'n clywed:

(Gw)na i wneud e > 'Na i wneud e
I will do it
Yn lle '(Gw)na i fe > 'Na i fe'

Gyda berfau byrion, fodd bynnag, byddwn ni'n tueddu i ddefnyddio 'bôn + terfyniadau' yn yr amser dyfodol, e.e:

(G)wela i di (y)fory > Wela i di fory
I’ll see you tomorrow

The verb that follows always takes a soft mutation.  An easy way to use the future would be to learn ‘gwneud’ in the future and put it front of all the verbs.  You may even hear:

(Gw)na i wneud e.      (instead of (Gw)na i fe)            I will do it.

Some shorter verbs like ‘gweld’ however, tend to take the regular ending, e.g:
I’ll see you tomorrow -  (G)wela i di fory.
