Neil Rowlands: Sut gwnes i greu parallel.cymru / How I created parallel.cymru

Dydw i ddim yn arfer ysgrifennu erthyglau i parallel.cymru achos rydw i’n cyhoeddi darnau o bobl eraill. Sut bynnag, gwnes i feddwl bydd e’n ddefnyddiol i ddisgrifio tipyn bach mwy am y prosiect…

I don’t usually write articles for parallel.cymru because I publish items from other people. However, I thought that it would be helpful to describe a little bit more about the project:

Dw i wedi bod yn dysgu Cymraeg yn Ne Cymru am y pedair blynedd ddiwethaf, ac ar ôl gwneud cynnydd trwy'r deunyddiau darllen sy'n addas i ddysgwyr, e.e. y cylchgrawn Lingo Newydd, cyfieithiadau o ffuglen i’r arddegau fel Roald Dahl a JK Rowling, Straeon Sydyn a llyfrau Bethan Gwanas a Lois Arnold, fe wnes i ffeindio'r cam i lyfrau a chylchgronau iaith gyntaf yn anodd. Gwnes i ymchwilio i ddeunyddiau mewn ieithoedd eraill a sylweddolais bod llawer o lyfrau a gwefannau i ddarllen yn paralel, yn paru ieithoedd gyda’i gilydd, fel Sbaeneg-Saesneg a Ffrangeg-Saesneg, gyda chynnwys wedi'i osod ochr-yn -ochr.I’ve been learning Welsh in South Wales for the last four years, and after progressing through the reading resources suitable for learners, such as the magazine Lingo Newydd, translations of teen fiction such as Roald Dahl and JK Rowling, Quick Reads and books by Bethan Gwanas and Lois Arnold, I found the jump up to first language books and magazines difficult. I looked into learning resources in other languages and noticed that many popular language pairs such as Spanish-English and French-English have parallel reading books and websites, with content laid out in both languages, side by side.
Mae profiad gyda fi o greu a marchnata gwefannau, ac wrth wirfoddoli mewn canolfannau a gweithgareddau iaith dw i wedi dod i nabod rhai pobl yn y gymuned. Felly ym mis Hydref 2017, gwnes i daflu’r profiadau yma at ei gilydd, gofynnais i rai ffrindiau i wneud cyfweliadau a gwnes i eu rhoi nhw ar wefan syml. Roedd yr adborth oddi wrth bobl yn bositif, felly gwnes i i’r wefan edrych yn broffesiynol a dywedais wrth fwy o bobl amdani hi. Ym mis Tachwedd gwnes i ymestyn y marchnata i gynnwys Say Something In Welsh, Trydar, ymddangosiadau ar S4C, postiadau i ganolfannau Dysgu Cymraeg, a lledaenu’r gair ar lafar wrth gwrs. I have experience of creating and marketing websites, and from volunteering at Welsh language centres and events I’ve got to know a few people in the community. So in October 2017 I simply mixed these ingredients together, asked a few friends to do interviews and popped them on a simple website. Feedback from people that I shared it with were positive, so I made the website look professional and told a few more people about it. Over November I expanded the marketing to include Say Something in Welsh, Twitter, S4C appearances, mailouts to Welsh Language Centres and good old word of mouth
Yn lle bod yn blog cyffredin, dw i'n canolbwyntio ar roi persbectif person cyntaf ar y byd Cymraeg. Felly, pobl sy'n ysgrifennu, rhedeg busnesau, trefnu gweithgareddau, creu cerddoriaeth a chelf, neu sydd â stori ddiddorol i’w hadrodd, sy’n rhannu eu profiadau. Mae hyn yn golygu y bydd cynnwys unigryw a safonol i chi ei fwynhau bob tro y byddwch yn dod i’r wefan. Rather than being an ordinary blog, I’m focussing on providing first person perspective on the Welsh language world. So people who write, run businesses, organise activities, create music and art, or simply have interesting stories to tell, share what they are doing. This also means that each time you come to the site, there will be quality and unique content to savour.
Mae pob erthygl yn cael eu trefnu yn ôl safon yr iaith, felly mae pobl yn gallu darllen Cymraeg yn syml fel mae pobl yn siarad, Cymraeg ysgrifenedig safonol, neu Gymraeg ffurfiol fel sy'n cael ei ddefnyddio mewn llenyddiaeth. Mae darparu Saesneg ochr yn ochr yn golygu ei bod yn hawdd iawn i wirio ystyr gair neu frawddeg. Wrth wneud hyn dw i'n gobeithio y bydd pobl yn gallu dod yn fwy cyfarwydd gyda darllen Cymraeg, a datblygu eu dealltwriaeth a’u gallu dros gyfnod o amser.All the articles are organised by the level of Welsh, so that people can read simple Welsh as people speak it, standard written Welsh, or the formal Welsh as used in literature. Providing English side by side means it is very easy to check a word or the meaning of a sentence. In this way I hope that people can become more familiar with reading Welsh and over time improve their abilities.
Nodwedd bwysig arall yw y bydd y cynnwys yn aros ar-lein- yn wahanol i gylchgronau a gwefannau eraill ble mae cynnwys defnyddiol ac eithriadol yn diflannu wrth gyhoeddi’r rhifyn nesaf. Felly, dros amser, bydd parallel.cymru yn tyfu’n gorpws o sut mae pobl yn defnyddio a rhyngweithio gyda'r iaith.Another distinguishing feature is that content will remain online- unlike magazines and other sites where exceptional and useful content disappears after the next edition is published. So, over time parallel.cymru will grow into a corpus of how people use and interact with the language.
Un o fy nodau tymor hir yw i ddarparu ffuglen wreiddiol, yn y ffurfiau hir a byr. Darparu cyfeithiadau o lyfrau Saesneg adnabyddus sy mas o hawlfraint sy’n helpu i wneud darllen Cymraeg yn haws. Hefyd, sicrhau bod ffuglen Gymraeg gyfoes ar gael gyda chyfiethiad Saesneg yn cyflwyno pobl i lenyddiaeth ac ysgrifenwyr Cymraeg.One of my long term goals is to provide original short form fiction and long form fiction. Providing translations of out of copyright English texts that people are familiar with helps reading in Welsh easier. Similarly, making contemporary Welsh fiction available with an English version introduces people to Welsh literature and writers.
Mae nodau tymor hir eraill yn cynnwys:
- Darparu canllaw gramadeg dwyieithog;
- Cyhoeddi papurau sydd o fewn cyrraedd pawb gan academyddion a myfyrwyr ôl-raddedig yn esbonio eu gwaith i gynulleidfa eang;
- Gweithio gyda thiwtoriad Cymraeg i Oedolion i ddarparu adnoddau am ddysgu anffurfiol;
- Creu erthyglau Sbaeneg-Cymraeg neu dair-ieithog i gefnogi pobl yn y Wladfa.
Other long term goals include:
- Providing a bilingual grammar guide;
- Publishing accessible papers from Welsh-speaking academics and postgraduate students that explains their work to a wide audience;
- Working with Welsh for Adults tutors to provide resources for informal learning;
- Creating Spanish-Welsh or trilingual articles to support people in Patagonia.
Ar hyn o bryd, dw i'n rhedeg parallel.cymru fel hobi yn fy amser sbar. Achos bod yr holl gynnwys yn mynd i fod ar gael am ddim, roedd yn rhaid i fi meddwl am fodel gweithredu cynaliadwy. Mae llawer o wefannau eraill yn ennill arian trwy gyfeirio at Amazon, ond dw i'n moyn hybu busnesau Cymreig, felly dydw i ddim yn mynd i wneud hynny. Mae gwefannau eraill yn gwthio hysbysebion a chlipiau sy’n chwarae’n awtomatig, ond dydw i ddim moyn tynnu oddi ar y cynnwys unigryw sydd ar gael yma.
Yn hytrach, rwy’n bwriadu sefydlu parallel.cymru fel menter elusennol, paratoi ceisiadau grant, ac yn ddiweddarach, darparu cyfleoedd i gwmnïau noddi’r wefan drwy gael postiad wythnosol sy’n esbonio eu cynnyrch.
I'm currently running parallel.cymru as a hobby in my spare time. As all content is, and will remain, available for free, I've had to think about a sustainable operating model. Many websites generate income through referrals to Amazon, but as I want to promote Welsh businesses I won't do that. Other websites inject advertising and auto-playing videos, but I don't want that to distract from the unique content hosted here.
Instead I will establish parallel.cymru as a charitable enterprise, prepare grant applications, and later on explore opportunities for organisations to sponsor the site in the form of a weekly post explaining their product.
Fodd bynnag, y rhannau pwysicaf o parallel.cymru yw ei chyfranwyr a’i darllenwyr, felly dw i'n diolch o waelod calon i’r nifer fawr o bobl sy'n cefnogi ac yn mwynhau’r prosiect hwn.However, the most important parts of parallel.cymru is its contributors and readers, so I extend heartfelt thanks to the many people who are supporting and enjoying this project.

Mwynhewch y darllen!
