Ask Dr Gramadeg: Dim Ond / Only

Dim ond

Pan fyddwch chi'n defnyddio'r ymadrodd hwn, bydd rhaid i chi newid trefn reolaidd y frawddeg Gymraeg, gan roi 'Dim ond' ar ddechrau'r frawddeg. Weydn, bydd y goddrych (the 'subject') yn dilyn yr ymadrodd 'Dim ond' yn syth. e.e:
When this phrase is used it must be placed first and the normal Welsh word order changed so that the subject (the person/thing doing the action) comes straight after ‘dim ond’  e.g:

I’m going                                -   Dw i’n mynd
(It’s) only me who is going   -   Dim ond fi sy’n mynd

* Wrth gwrs, ar lafar yn Saesneg, naturiol ydy dweud 'It's only ME going'

Nodwch - Yn yr Amser Presennol, rhaid newid pob ffurf ar 'Bod': ‘dw i / rwyt ti / mae e / mae hi / dyn ni / dych chi / maen nhw’ i fod y ffurf berthynol 'sy’ ('who is / who are'), e.e:
All the parts of ‘bod’: ‘Dw i, rwyt ti, mae e/hi, dyn ni, dych chi, maen nhw’ - are changed to the third person - ‘sy’ (who is/are) in the present tense, eg:

Mae e’n siarad.       >     Dim ond fe sy’n siarad.
He is speaking.             (It’s) only he who is speaking.

Maen nhw’n yfed.       >         Dim ond nhw sy’n yfed.
They are drinking.               (It’s) only they who are drinking.

*Wrth gwrs, ar lafar yn Saesneg, bydd pobl yn dweud yn naturiol, 'It's only HIM speaking, ' neu 'It's only THEM speaking', gan ddefnyddio tôn llais i bwysleisio'r goddrych!
