Word Tango

A small company in the Netherlands has released an iOS and Google Play word puzzle game, Word Tango. In its first iteration, Word Tango can be played in English, Welsh, Cornish, Danish, Faroese, Icelandic, Dutch and Frysian, with more languages to follow. Parallel.cymru asked the game’s designer, Remco Denessen, to talk us through how he went about making the game and why they are supporting lesser-used languages. I speak Limburgisch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limburgish), which is classed as a language, but everyone speaks a dialect, or variant, of that language- so each village or town speak a little bit differently. Made For Each Other- A Sci-fi Novella by David Jandrell

David Jandrell is a best-selling author of Welsh Valleys dialect books- observing and commenting on the humourous way that people of South Wales speak. He then set himself the challenge of writing fiction- and to write a science fiction story.  The challenge arose in that David only reads non-fiction, and had never read a scifi book in his life- making this a unique and distincitive novella.  It follows an autistic man who is ejected from Earth for not being able to contribute to society, but his approach to problem-solving and communication enable him to overcome the obstacles he finds when his craft is drawn to a planetoid on the outskirts of the solar system and meets an all-knowing sentient entity.…

David Jandrell Grumpy Old Valleys Men

Welcome to a monthly series of exclusive articles by Welsh Valleys Humour author David Jandrell.  In it he explores frustrations with modern life, all recounted through his unique humour and Valleys dialiect… January 2019: The over-use of science terms It would have been the mid to late 1970s when I heard it first. It may have happened before that- I just noticed it then. By the mid 1970s, my vocabulary had increased exponentially since the last time I mentioned it – and I could spell palaeontologist! Most of the words that I had added to my vocabulary were scientific ones as I have become a scientist by this time – which is probably why I noticed it. “What did you…

Jeremy Vine Twitter

Special news; our correspondent, Peter Mescall, has been in contact with Jeremy Vine after the recent language debate on Twitter. Mr Vine presents a program on Radio 5 and was reviewing the year; a caller criticised the Welsh language, with an example about people who change to Welsh instead of continuing in English when English speakers enter a pub. Jeremy Vine received a message on Twitter; the user was not happy with the program and the discussion then deteriorated. Mr Vine tried to resolve the situation, but the image used on Twitter didn’t help- unfortunately, the title and image of the article wasn’t suitable and Mr Vine then received a lot of criticism. That’s when our correspondent and many others,…

Luke Upton Absolutely Huge main image

Luke Upton, a business journalist and creator of the popular spoof Twitter account @NotGavHenson, introduces his fictionalised new hero of Welsh rugby: a story of Twitter, the media and how a Lion’s bite led to a quick rewrite. When Wales and Ospreys hooker Scott Baldwin got bitten by a Lion cub whilst in South Africa with his club in September 2017, my first thought was- how on earth did that happen?
