Ask Dr Gramadeg: Mor, Cystal & Cynddrwg

Mor

mor = so
e.e. mor dwp so stupid.

mor ... â = as ... as
e.e. mor dwp â       as stupid as
mor dwp â choed    as stupid as a tree

Cofiwch: Bydd 'mor' yn achosi treiglad meddal; byddwn ni'n defnyddio 'mor' yn lle 'yn', ee.

Dw i’n dwp             Dw i mor dwp â fe
I'm so stupid           I'm as stupid as him

Mor

mor      =  so
e.g: mor dwp        so stupid.

mor …â    =  as…as
e.g: mor dwp â         as stupid as.

‘mor’ causes a soft mutation. No ‘yn’ is required with ‘mor’
e.g: ‘Dw i’n dwp’ but ‘Dw i mor dwp â fe’.

Cystal

cystal = so good / as good
e.g. So fe cystal          He’s not so good

cystal â = as good as
e.e. So fe cystal â hi       He’s not as good as her

Cystal

cystal         =  so good / as good

e.g: So fe cystal       He’s not so good.
cystal â      =  as good as
e.g: So fe cystal â hi     He’s not as good as her.

Cynddrwg

cynddrwg = so bad / as bad
e.e. So fe cynddrwg             He’s not so bad

cynddrwg â = as bad as
e.e. So fe cynddrwg â hi     He’s not as bad as her

Cynddrwg

cynddrwg   =  so bad / as bad
e.g: So fe cynddrwg.      He’s not so bad.

cynddrwg â =  as bad as
e.g: So fe cynddrwg â hi.   He’s not as bad as her.

Gilydd

ein gilydd = each other (we)
â’n gilydd = as each other

Dyn ni mor blentynnaidd â’n gilydd
We are as childish as each other.

eich gilydd = each other (you, lluosog neu ffurfiol)
â’ch gilydd = as each other

Dych chi mor blentynnaidd â’ch gilydd
You are as childish as each other.

ei gilydd = each other (they) [Cofiwch 'ei' sy'n gywir yma, nid 'eu'!]
â’i gilydd = as each other

Maen nhw mor blentynnaidd *â’i gilydd
They are as childish as each other.

* 'ei gilydd' sy'n gywir, yn hytrach nag 'eu gilydd'. Ystyr 'cilydd > gilydd' yw rhywbeth fel 'ffrind', felly ystyr llythrennol ar 'Maen nhw mor blentynnaidd â’i gilydd' yw 'They (each one of them) is as childish as his friend'!

Cofiwch: Mae'r gair 'â' yn achosi 'treiglad llaes’ ('p / t / c > ph / th / th'). Dim ond mewn iath ffurfiol iawn y byddwch chi'n gweld 'â + ti > â thi', fodd bynnag.

Gilydd

ein gilydd    =  each other (we)
â’n gilydd    =  as each other

Dyn ni mor blentynnaidd â’n gilydd.
We are as childish as each other.

eich gilydd  =  each other (you)

â’ch gilydd  =  as each other

Dych chi mor blentynnaidd â’ch gilydd.
You are as childish as each other.

ei gilydd      =  each other (they)
â’i gilydd     =  as each other

Maen nhw mor blentynnaidd *â’i gilydd.
They are as childish as each other.

*ei gilydd(ü), rather than *eu gilydd(x), as you  might expect.

â causes a ‘treiglad llaes’ - p, t, c > ph, th,c h after all the above.  This rule is not normally followed with ‘ti’ in informal speech

e.g:  ‘Sa i mor dwp â ti,
rather than - ‘Sa i mor dwp â thi’.
