Siop Anrhegion Cymraeg Ar-lein Becca Hemmings: Sut Dyn Ni’n Cefnogi’r Iaith / The Welsh Gift Shop Online’s Becca Hemmings: How We Support The Language

in Intermediate/Interviews

Mae Becca o Siop Anrhegion Cymru yn cefnogi’r iaith, ond dydy hi ddim yn rhugl. Sut ydy hi ddarparu gwasanaethau i bobl sy’n dewis i ddefnyddio’r iaith? Gadewch i ni ddarganfod…
The Welsh Gift Shop‘s Becca supports the language, but isn’t fluent. How does she provide services to those who choose to use Welsh? Let’s find out…

Becca, ti'n rhedeg siop anrhegion Cymreig ar-lein, Welshgiftshop.com. Pam gwnest ti benderfynu i weithio am dy hun?
Roeddwn wedi gweithio mewn e-fasnach am nifer o flynyddoedd; yn creu a rhedeg siopau anrhegion am gwmnïau eraill, ond fy mreuddwyd oedd i redeg siop anrhegion fy hun.
Un diwrnod wrth chwilio am swyddi, awgrymodd fy ffrind mai nawr oedd yr amser perffaith i 'ddilyn fy mreuddwyd'- ond roedd angen syniad arnaf. Ar unwaith, daeth 'Cymru' i'r meddwl gan fy mod yn falch iawn i fod yn Gymraeg ac yn caru ein traddodiadau a chrefftwaith.
Yna cafodd Siop Anrhegion Cymru ei eni!
Ar ôl ychydig o flynyddoedd o weithio ochr yn ochr gyda'r swydd amser llawn arall, roeddwn i'n gallu cymryd y naid ac ymrwymo fy holl amser i'r siop. Nid wyf erioed wedi edrych yn ôl!
Becca, you run an online Welsh gift shop, Welshgiftshop.com. Why did you decide to work for yourself?
I was working in e-marketing for a number of years, creating and running gift shops for other companies, but it was my dream to run my own gift shop.
One day while searching for jobs, my friend suggested that now was the perfect time to 'follow my dream'- but I needed an idea. At once, 'Wales' came to mind because I'm very proud to be Welsh and I love its traditions and crafts. And that's how Welsh Gift Shop was born!
After a few years of working side by side with my full time job, I was able to take the jump and commit all my time to the shop. I've never looked back!
Ac wyt ti'n gwneud y stoc dy hunan?
Rydym yn dod o hyd i anrhegion o bob man o Gymru, achos un o'n hamcanion yw cefnogi gwneuthurwyr a chrefftwaith Cymreig. Mae rhai o'n stoc unigryw wedi cael ei dylunio gan fy hun, dyma fy hoff rhan o'm gwaith.
Mae fy nheulu hefyd yn dod i fyny a syniadau am anrhegion (daeth fy mam i fyny ag anrheg sydd ein gwerthwr orau- gwydryn whisgi 'Iechyd Da') ac rwyf hefyd wedi recriwtio rhai o'm ffrindiau ysgol i ddylunio anrhegion i ni- mae'r 'bag Cymraes am byth' yn cael ei wneud gan yr artist, Nicky Barter, yng Nghaerdydd.
And do you make the stock yourself?
We find gifts from all over Wales, because one of our aims is to support Welsh makers and workmanship. Some of the unique stock is designed by myself, which is the favourite part of my work.
My family also come up with ideas and gifts (my Mam came with our best-selling gift- 'Good Health' whiskey glasses) and I've recruited some of my school friends to design presents for us- the 'Welshwoman forever' bag was done by the artist Nicky Barter in Cardiff.
Oes cefndir mewn crefftau gyda ti?
Rwy'n caru arlunio a crefft- gwnes i astudio nhw yn yr ysgol. Mae'n ardderchog cael swydd lle gallaf fod yn greadigol.
Do you have a background in crafts?
I love arts and crafts- I studied them in school. It's excellent to have a job where I can be creative.
O ble mae pobl prynu’ch eitemau - ai hi'n bennaf i bobl yng Nghymru neu a ydych chi'n gwerthu i lawer o bobl ledled y Deyrnas Unedig a'r byd?
Rydym yn bennaf yn gwerthu i bobl yn y UK ond rydym hefyd wedi anfon archebion ar draws y byd- America ac Awstralia yn ail ac yn drydydd- rydym hyd yn oed wedi postio sanau Gwarchodlu Cymreig i Hong Kong. Mae bobl o Gymru i'w gael on mhobman!
From where do people buy your items- is it from mainly in Wales or do you sell to lots of people throughout the United Kingdom and world?
We mainly sell to people in the UK but we sometimes send orders across the world- America and Australia is the third most common destination- but we have posted Welsh Guards socks to Hong Kong. People from Wales can be found everywhere!
A dw i'n deall mod ti ddim yn siarad lot o Gymraeg, felly sut wyt ti'n delio â'r cwsmeriaid sy'n moyn ddefnyddio'r iaith?
Yn anffodus mae fy Nghymraeg yn ddrwg iawn. Fe ges i gradd B mewn Cymraeg GCSE (hanner bywyd yn ôl!) - ond nid wyf yn teimlo'n hyderus iawn yn ei siarad. Yn ffodus Cymraeg yw iaeth cyntaf fy mam, felly mae hi yn fy helpu i gynnig cefnogaeth i gwsmeriaid yn Gymraeg ac mae'n fy helpu gyda'r cyfweliad hwn! (Diolch o galon Mam!)
Rhan wych arall o'm swydd yw fy mod yn dysgu mwy a mwy o Gymraeg bob dydd.
And I understand that you don't speak a lot of Welsh, so how do you deal with customers who are using the language?
Unfortunately my Welsh is very poor. I had a grade B in Welsh GCSE (half a lifetime ago!) but I don't feel very confident with speaking. Fortunately Welsh is my Mam's first language, so she helps to give support to Welsh speaking customers and she helped with this interview! (Thanks very much Mam!)
Another great part of my job is that I learn more and more Welsh every day.
Pa gyngor fydddi'n rhoi i fusnesau a gwasanaethau eraill sydd am wella eu darpariaeth Gymraeg?
Mae'r iaith Gymraeg mor brydferth ac mae'n bwysig ei gadw'n fyw. Byddwn yn dweud cyflogwch siaradwyr Cymraeg (ond peidiwch â chymryd fy Mam i ffwrdd o'r siop!)
What advice would you give to other businesses and services who are improving their Welsh language services?
The Welsh language is very beautiful and it is important to keep it alive. I would say that you should employ Welsh speaking staff (but don't take my Mam away from the shop!)
Welsh Gift Shop's Becca and Ann

Hyfryd, mae’n wych gweld pobl yn ymdrechu i gefnogi’r wlad a’r iaith. Pob lwc gyda’r busnes a dysgu Cymraeg!
Diolch o galon a diolch yn fawr am y gwahodd i siarad yma.

Lovely, it’s great to see people making an effort to support the country’s language. Good luck with the business and learning Welsh!
Thanks very much for the invite to talk here.
