Ask Dr Gramadeg: Cyflwyno’r Gorffennol gydag Es i / Introducing the Past Tense with Es i

Dyma'r amser gorffennol ‘mynd’ (‘to go’). Mae'r gair 'gorffennol' yn dod o 'gorffen' ('to finish')

This is the past tense - y gorffennol (gorffen - to finish) of ‘mynd’ - ‘to go’.

Yr Amser Presennol (Present Tense): Dw i’n mynd > I’m going /I go
Yr Amser Perffaith (Perfect Tense): Dw i wedi mynd > I have gone
Yr Amser Gorffennol (Past Tense): Es i > I went (Yn llythrennol - went I)

Present Tense: Dw i’n mynd > I’m going/I go
Perfect Tense: Dw i wedi mynd > I have gone
Past Tense: Es i > I went (Lit. - went I)

Does dim rhaid defnyddio 'yn traethiadol' gyda'r amser perffaith, gan fod y geiryn 'wedi' yn ei le.

Does dim rhaid defnyddio 'yn traethiadol' gyda'r amser gorffennol, gan nad ydyn ni'n defnyddio 'bod'.

Er mwyn ateb cwestiynau yn yr amser gorffennol (ac yn yr amser perffaith), byddwn ni'n defnyddio - Do ('yes'), Naddo ('no').

No yn or ’n is required with the perfect tense because ‘wedi’ is put in its place.

No yn or ’n is required with the past tense because the verb ‘bod’ (to be) is not used.

The answers for all the past tense are - Do (yes), Naddo (no)

Cofiwch mai'r ferf sy'n dod yn gyntaf yn Gymraeg - 'Es i' ('Went I'), e.e.
Es i i’r dre - Went I to the town ('I went to town')

Mae'r gair 'i' cyntaf yn golygu 'I', mae'r ail air 'i' yn golygu 'to'. Bydd rhaid i chi ddefnyddio'r ddwy ohonyn nhw os byddwch chi eisiau dweud 'I am going somewhere' ('Dw i'n mynd i rywle'), neu 'I went somewhere' ('Es i i rywle').

Remember, the verb comes first in Welsh: Es i > Went I.
Es i i’r dre > Went I to town.

The first ‘i’ means ‘I’, the second ‘i’ means ‘to’. You will need to use both if you are saying that you are going to somewhere.
